Response to Session 1.2 Readings & Lecture 2 Response

Handbook for Bloggers and CyberDissidents - Response

This is a very general reading in regard to how to blog. I think most people have dabbled in online chat or blogs. From the early days of bulletin boards and geocities people have had an outlet to view and share their opinions. Like anything else, the genre is expanding everyday. The story of the day is whether blogger's should be counted as journalists. Journalists certainly don't think so but really when you think about it, they have just as much credibility as some news writers. Its all free speech. The journalists of today by no means have to be educated to broadcast to our living rooms. Take the sports reporters such as Ian Healy, Shane Webke and Wally Lewis. Greats of their sporting codes but I don't see a journalism degree there.

How online communities are born--and what happens when they die - Response

I feel that a major factor at large here is the fact that sites like geocities are privately owned. This in itself takes away peoples freedom. People are free to post but where that info goes and if its taken away is not up to them. In all aspects of life, internet included, the "NEXT BIG THING" will always take centre stage and all others before it will be seen as obselite. Even if there is a following left over, they too will find themselves jumping ship to the next thing. To me it seems that people are like sheep when it comes to social networking sites. No matter how much they may like a site, if it becomes unpopular by the general population and the media then they will jump ship. Strange phenomenon.

Lecture 2 - Response

Todays lecture was in relation to the history of the internet and computers in general. How technology has progressed over a short space of time. We explored Charles Baggage's work which was later finished and proven to be revolutionary. His machine was called the difference engine. It worked like an old manual calculator and was seen to be the first style of computer program. We discussed the difference between the aspects of development and propriety. To pay or not to pay. It was inevitable that companies like Apple and Microsoft would take this propriety road. It was and still is big business. These software and computer companies made the product that could not be shared or changed in any way which made it great for them but not for the user. IBM on the other hand was more variable and allowed for more variance. The early days of bulletin boards, shared research and MUDs is all but over. Social media has taken over the internet in many forms and will continue to develop through time.
